The Hellhound Myth: Polytheistic, Zoroastrian and Christianized Sources of Indo-European Mythology

    Pedro H. Affonso de Paula

Abstract : The hellhound myth is visible in many Indo-European traditions. However, this motif has a large variety of expressions in Eurasia and the American continent. Furthermore, it is clear that IE peoples were polytheistic, but some of the accounts that point towards an IE mythology were conceived in either Zoroastrian or Christian contexts. Still, it seems that in some of those sources the eschatological value of hellhounds remained central in the narratives, even if there is a considerable degree of divergence between them — especially concerning the merging of hellhound narratives with those of heroes identified as “dragon-slayers” in some accounts. The aim of this article is, therefore, to understand how religious reforms and other processes might have reshaped the hellhound myth and what kind of continuities can be found in those accounts; as well as to conceive what a proper Indo-European hellhound myth might have looked like in a comparative and historical approach.

Keywords : hellhounds; religious resistance; religious reforms; dragon-slayers; Indo-European studies.
